When I was a kid, my Dad and I used to draw superhero comics together. I’m not sure I fully appreciated how cool that was at the time! I got into comics at a very early age, and my Dad did plenty of cartooning himself when he was younger, so it was something we could do together.
I had this character called Dark Thing, a kind of Batman-styled hero who wore a really inexplicably shaped helmet. My Dad created the Eye — on the spot, I’m pretty sure — to be his alien, eyeball-laser firing crime-fighting partner. (I am sure I still have these comics somewhere, but tragically I am not sure exactly where!)
Anyhow, this year for Father’s Day I thought it’d be fun to draw my Dad a new poster of our two characters. I hope he realizes how neat it is to be able to tell other cartoonists that my Dad and I used to draw comics together. Both my folks were always super supportive of my cartooning habit. It’s a far cry from the “parents never got it” story that a lot of artists have.
